Skateboarding’s time has come, as evidence by the fact that there are more than 9 million skaters who have driven skateboarding to become the second-largest participant sport in the U.S.accounting for over 1 billion dollars in annual sales. The youth of today see skateboarding as a sport, a lifestyle, a mode of transportation, and an expression of creativity.
Joining the tNBC (Teen NBC) lineup on Saturday mornings this fall is “Skate,” an action-driven, half-hour drama that takes viewers on a weekly extreme course of kick-flips and thrills with storylines concerning the life of aspiring proskater Josh Raden (played by television newcomer Christopher Jorgens), and his relationships with a motley crew of friends. Among his crew are: Dim (Jorgito Vargas, Jr., “Excess Baggage”), a graffiti-scrawler-turned-video artist and Josh’s best friend; Michelle (Adrienne Carter, “So Weird”), Josh’s neighbor and an outside observer to the world of skating; Whitney Lass (Claudette Mink, “Andromeda”), a retired U.S. snowboarding champion and founder/publisher of the online alternative magazine Spoken; and Vanessa (Blair Wingo, “The Parkers”), a videographer/poet who sees extreme sports as the revolution of her generation.
Through a combination of guest appearances made by select professional skateboarders, various video and guerrilla film shooting styles, the series promises to be unique, grittyand as real as the teens who watch it.
As executive produced by Thomas W. Lynch (NBC’s “Just Deal,” “The Secret World of Alex Mack”), “Skate” is a production of Tom Lynch Productions in association with GEP Productions. Bob Hargrove (“Road Rage”) and co-creator/writer Christopher Mack (“Fresh Prince of Bel Air”) are the producers.
