TED HARBERT
Veteran television executive Ted Harbert was named President, NBC Studios, in August 1999. He reports to Scott Sassa, President, NBC West Coast, and is responsible for overseeing all NBC Studios operations, including the development and production of television programming for all dayparts, including primetime, daytime, late-night and Saturday morning.
NBC Studios, which received a record 28 primetime Emmy nominations in 2000, currently produces or co-produces a number of NBC hit shows across all dayparts. NBC Studios also produces four of the six new series for the 2001-02 season: "Emeril," "Crossing Jordan" (with Tailwind Productions), "UC: Undercover" (in association with Jersey Films and Twentieth Century Fox Television), and "Inside Schwartz" (with Twentieth Century Fox Television).
Harbert joined NBC after serving as a producer for DreamWorks SKG since February 1997. While at DreamWorks, he served as the executive producer of the ABC comedy series Arsenio and It’s Like, You Know... . Harbert spent the first 20 years of his career in the entertainment industry with ABC, where he rose to the position of president and then chairman of ABC Entertainment in January 1993. In this position, he was responsible for all primetime and late-night entertainment programming.
During his tenure as president and chairman, ABC introduced "N.Y.P.D. Blue," "The Drew Carey Show," "Spin City," and "The Practice." Harbert also oversaw ABC’s production ventures with such companies as DreamWorks SKG, Brillstein-Grey Communications and Jim Henson Productions. Prior to that, Harbert had served as Executive Vice President, Primetime, ABC Entertainment, since April 1989. In this position, he was responsible for current series and specials, development of reality and variety series (including the long-running hit "America’ s Funniest Home Videos"), scheduling of primetime programming and the acquisition of theatrical films.
Harbert joined ABC Entertainment in July 1977 as a feature film coordinator and rose through the ranks, serving in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility. Prior to joining ABC, he worked as a producer in the news department at WHDH Radio in Boston, while attending Boston University, where he graduated magna cum laude. Harbert is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board of the USC School of Theater, Film and Television, a board member of the USC School of Cinema-Television’s Television Advisory Council, and the executive committee of Boston University’s School of Communications. In addition, he is on the board of governors of UCLA’s Center for Communication Policy and the board of directors for Friends of the L.A. Free Clinic. He is a past president of the Hollywood Radio & Television Society.
Harbert currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Susan, and their children, Emily and William.
